2018 Sleepovers

Bring your family or Scout troop for a night at the Science Center!  There’s a terrific variety of themes to choose from.

Engineering Challenge Sleepover
Friday, Feb. 23

Put on your thinking cap as you design, build, and test out feats of engineering genius! Defy gravity with a da Vinci bridge, race cars powered by balloons, and challenge your friends to a tower building contest. On Saturday, stay for the annual Engineer the Future event to meet with engineering professionals and enjoy additional hands-on activities.

Robot Roundup Sleepover – Boys Night!
Saturday, March 3

Calling all robot enthusiasts! Visit with R2D2, Gort, and Robby while getting hands-on with robots of all shapes and sizes. Assemble robots with Cubelets, navigate Sphero and BB-8 through obstacle courses, and carry out space missions with Lego Mindstorm EV3’s.

*Please note: While this event is boys only, female chaperones are welcome!

Awesome Astronomy Sleepover

Explore the wonders of the cosmos in this star-studded sleepover adventure. Take a look at the night sky, and see if you have what it takes to be an astronaut.  Be sure to visit with local amateur astronomers on Saturday as part of our annual Space Out! Astronomy weekend event.

Medieval Science Sleepover

Take a step back in time and discover the cutting-edge science of the middle ages! Try your hand at alchemy, design and test trebuchets, and discover how our ancestors kept time. The dragons might be mythical, but the fun won’t be!

Earth Rocks! Sleepover

Celebrate Earth Day by discovering some amazing features that make our home planet special! Take a virtual trip around the world, experiment with glowing minerals and magnetic rocks, and defy physics with water. You won’t look at Earth the same way again!

It’s Electric Sleepover
Friday, April 27

Prepare to be shocked by all of the illuminating, hair-raising, and buzzworthy things you can do with electricity! Play a piano made of fruit, light up a Play-Doh creation, and explore paper circuits. It will be a night sure to spark your imagination!

Mad Science Sleepover

Beauty and the Beast Sleepover
Saturday, Aug. 4

See the matinee performance of Beauty and the Beast at the Benedum Center, then spend the night at the museum. Drop off your overnight gear at the Science Center (parking is FREE for sleepover guests). Then take the subway downtown. After the show, grab a bite to eat, then head back to the Science Center for night of sleepover fun. Sleepover activities begin at 6 pm.

All Science Center sleepovers include:

  • Free admission for the day following the sleepover, including Highmark SportsWorks® and USS Requin


Groups need to provide one adult chaperone for every eight children. Families or those not part of a group must also have a parent or guardian present.


Check-in begins at 6 pm the evening of your sleepover, where you will receive a detailed schedule of the night's happenings. The overnight experience will begin with a brief orientation, after which participants will enjoy a night of themed activities. Lights-out is at midnight. All sleepover gear must be removed from the building by 9:30 am, but you are welcome to stay the day after and explore even more with your general admission, included in your sleepover cost!


A Sleepover T-shirt is the best souvenir to remember your special night at the Science Center. They will be on sale in the XPLOR Store the morning after your overnight experience.
