Our Explore! Field Trip includes all of the exhibits in the main Carnegie Science Center building: SciQuest, the Miniature Railroad & Village, SeaScape Aquarium, Exploration Station, and — new this year — our submarine. You also can add one scheduled demonstration of your choice in the Kitchen Theater, the Works Theater, SeaScape, or the Science Stage.

VISIT THESE EXHIBITS
SciQuest Where else can you practice your piloting skills, construct an earthquake-proof building, and capture your own shadow, all in the same room? Explore hands-on exhibits in flight, forces of nature, and waves.
Miniature Railroad & Village®
Completely hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind historic replicas and wonderfully realistic animated scenes recreate western Pennsylvania at the turn of the 20th century. The Miniature Railroad & Village places our region’s notable figures, technologies, and natural resources in a historic context to help students understand the crucial role western Pennsylvania played in our country’s growth.
SeaScape
Which kinds of animals live in a coral reef? What is symbiosis? Discover the answers to these questions and many more at this underwater encounter. Our 2,000-gallon coral reef exhibit contains well over 400 species of plants and animals, including seahorses, corals and live mangrove trees. Explore with magnifying glasses and a video microscope, and witness live feedings several times a day.
Exploration Station & Exploration Station Hands-on exploration encourages curiosity and lays the foundation for science basics and problem solving skills. Interactive play includes designing an electric circuit, launching rockets, directing water flow, and much more. CAUTION: You may get wet!
Sports Atrium
This year two of the most popular and exciting exhibits from Highmark SportsWorks® are temporarily moving to the Atrium in Carnegie Science Center’s main building while construction occurs on the new Highmark SportsWorks® (opening late 2009). Reach for the sky on the trampoline, or take a spin on the human gyroscope. Plus, ride the simulator for thrills and chills.
USS Requin
Come aboard to find out how 80 men used their expertise, humor, and sheer ingenuity to carve out a rough and adventurous life aboard this authentic Cold War submarine. Multimedia interactive kiosks throughout the sub explain principles of physical science integral to submarines and share stories from real USS Requin veterans. Learn how submarines float, dive, and why shape matters.
Early learner groups may reserve Exploration Station Junior for 45 minutes. You may be sharing this space with other groups.

CHOOSE A DEMONSTRATION
Kitchen Theater
In the Kitchen Theater, you’ll learn about the science of food and cooking in a fun 1950s atmosphere. Live demonstrations—part cooking class, part science lab—take you through the biology, chemistry and physics that combine to make your favorite foods. From omnivore pizza to fiery fruit, the Kitchen Theater delivers edible science in 30 minutes or less. Click here to see all Kitchen Theater demonstration options.
Works Theater
Science is always under construction in the Works Theater, where you’ll find live, interactive science demonstrations performed in a unique multimedia setting. Taste a frozen marshmallow, stomp to the beat of physics or feel the zap of electricity—it’s all in the Works.
