Exciting things are happening at Carnegie Science Center as construction is well underway on a brand-new expansion! The new PPG Science Pavilion will open in June 2018.
The expansion, being built eastward along the Ohio River, will create a world-class destination for public exploration in science and technology and will include FedEx STEM Learning Labs, the Scaife Exhibit Gallery, and PointView Hall and Terrace.
What's the timeline for the project?
Construction began in late 2016 and will continue through mid-2018. The expansion is slated to open in June 2018.
Will exhibits be closed during construction?
Currently, Exploration Station, Jr. is the only affected exhibit area. This area is closed for renovation and will reopen on March 3rd as the Little Learner Clubhouse powered by PNC Grow Up Great.
The River View Café is currently closed for renovations and will reopen in March 2018. Because of this, the Science Center will have limited food service available to guests and groups. During this time, on-site food trucks are available on select dates from 10:30 am to 2 pm, weather permitting, with child-friendly favorites and healthy options. Food trucks can be accessed on the ground floor near the café. Seating is available. Additionally, on select dates in February and March, a Café Kiosk serving sandwiches, salads, snacks, and beverages will be available in the Main Lobby. Check our calendar for updates on the food truck schedule!
Will the construction affect my visit at all?
During the project, how you get from place to place around the building may change. Some ramps will close and some doors may be blocked. You may be routed through a stairwell or out an alternative door to reach exhibits like the submarine. When you arrive for your visit, posted signs will direct you to the various exhibits and Science Center staff members will be happy to help guide you to your destination.
